Online Poker
The game also has another name: the art of civilized bushwacking. Especially after the televization of Texas Hold’em it has risen to dramatic levels of popularity. In fact, this version is now more popular than the standard 5-card draw that everyone, even if they are not online punters, has played quite a few times in their lifetime. Nowadays, there’s not a single top online casino that respects the name, that does not offer at least two versions of the game.
Online poker: a trip through time
Boeckels, bocken, bockspyl, pochbret, poque, poch, pocker. Different names, origins, derivatives, variations of the same game that go back to the 1300’s in France and Germany. History, tells of another similar card game named as-nas, that games from Persia even earlier than that. Sometimes played with 20-card decks, other times with 25 and 5 suites, it’s basically the same game. However, what we have come to know now as poker, comes from the 1800’s and the gambling establishments of the Mississippi river steamboats and New Orleans.
In the forms of the 5-card draw or the 7-card stud, it became the stuff of legends and even movies for famous card thieves. Initially played at home or in bars until the casinos decided to include it in their entertainment packages after the end of World War II. From then on, it’s simply the most popular card game.
It’s more than a game of chance and luck
Here comes the main reason that many people prefer to play this game at home instead of either casinos, or in front of their pc’s opting for a provider of online poker. Either in a brick-and-mortar house, or via the internet, players cannot exercise the basic concept that games with it. The art of bluffing. The art of winning hands without actually having a strong combination. And this is why Texas Hold’em has become so popular. It still offers this chance for those who join poker rooms and play against other players.
Taking this concept out of the equation, the rest is the same. Regardless of the version, the player needs to arrange 5 cards in a combination that wins. Each one has a different value and strength:
Royal Flush
The strongest hand possible. Ace, King, Queen, Jack and ten from the same suite (hearts, clubs, spades, diamonds)
Straight Flush
Any straight except the aforementioned that involves 5 cards of the same suite.
Four of a kind
Four aces, four kings, four Queens etc…
Full House
Three cards of one kind and two cards from another (for example: 3 Kings + 2 tens or 3 Jacks plus 2 eights.)
Flush
Five cards of the same suite that do not form a straight
Straight
Any five cards of any suite that form a sequence (8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen – 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
Three of a kind
Three tens, three jacks etc…
Two pairs
Two Jacks and two 10s, or Two fours and two fives.
One pair
Any pair of similar cards
High card
If no combination can be formed then the card of highest value wins.
Where does the player get involved in online poker?
It is strongly recommended to read the rules for each different online casino. There are versions that actually reverse the order between the full house and the flush (considering the latter as a stronger combination) and between the straight and the three of a kind (the latter becomes the winning hand).
Straight Ups
Everything is done in one action. All the cards are dealt at the same time, there’s one round of raising and re-raising, while the players are not allowed to change any of the cards in their hand.
Draws
An initial hand of the pre-agreed number of cards is dealt to each player. Then, without looking, they need to place an ante. Afterwards, they can see their hand and change up to three cards. After this is completed for all players, there’s another round of wagers.
Studs
The cards are dealt one at a time in combinations of face-up or face-down cards that has either been agreed upon, before the game begun, or declared by the dealer. No changes are allowed, while participants place their bets after each card is dealt.
Communities
Participants receive either 2 or 3 cards each while the rest of the cards that are required to complete the 5-card set are dealt in the middle and are common for all players. In fact, a further categorization here comes from the number of cards in hand that a player can use. Texas hold’em (which belongs to this category) is completely free. In other versions, when a player is dealt 2 cards, it automatically means that they have to use both of them. In contrast, if they are dealt 3 cards, then they can choose which ones to use. However, they do need to use two.
There is no limit to the variations
There’s a term in poker that says it all: «dealer’s choice». Ostensibly, it means that whoever deals the cards can choose which kind of poker to play. While this option may not be available in online poker (yet), it says that it’s up to the imagination of a person how to make this even more interesting than it already is. Some of it may come out of declaring cards to use as jokers or wilds. There’s a variant called «striptease» where there is a second set of cards on the table, and, if a player, holds any cards matching this specific set, then they must discard them and play with whatever remains.
Other modifications that can be made refer to «low ball» where actually the lowest combination wins, or «high-low split» where the highest and the lowest card can split the pot. There really is no end to what people can do at home or in a non-professional environment. Unfortunately, the official casinos, either traditional or online, have not yet caught up. They offer only a limited number of versions. However, those options are good enough to address the needs of every sort of gambler.
