The rules
The basic objective of the game is the number 9. Get as close to it as possible. It is produced by the total value of the cards that are dealt. Basically, two hands of two cards each are dealt. Typically, the 1st and 3rd card go to the «banker’s» hand, while the 2nd and 4th cards go to the «player’s». 10s, jacks, queens and kings have no face value (=0). All other cards count according to their own face value. If the total exceeds 10 then it is subtracted to leave a single digit total. For example, if the hand is a 7 and a 6, the total is 13. Minus 10 makes the total to compete equal to 3. The winning hand is the one with the highest total.
The online baccarat version that is most commonly played in casinos, is called «Punto (i.e. Player) Banco (i.e. Banker). The house is always the dealer and makes the rules. Both sides can draw a third card according to the following rules:
- The «player» can draw if they have a total equal to or under 5.
- The «banker» can draw if:
- They have a total of 3 and the 3rd card of the player is an 8
- They have a total of 4 and the 3rd card of the player is between 2 and 7
- They have a total of 5 and the 3rd card of the player is between 4 and 7
- They have a total of 6 and the 3rd card of the player is either a 6 or a 7
Tie
There is such a thing as a tie when the totals of both are equal. In fact, since the chances of this actually happening are lower, there are greater payouts. The provisions on this can be quite different from casino to casino. So you need to be sure to read the relevant clauses in the regulations.
Other popular versions are the Baccarat Banque and the Chemin de Fer. Mostly, they have to do with who will be the banker, if that will be permanent, and who will be the player (all other participants share one hand, or each hand is dealt to a different player).
Wagering at online baccarat
In all versions there are only 2 hands that compete. The remaining participants can place side bets. Ostensibly, there are 5 bets that can be placed. All wagers are in, either before the hands are dealt or before a third card is drawn:
- Win of the player’s hand
- Win of the banker’s hand
- Tie
- Player pair where the bet is that the hand will consist of 2 cards of the same value (two 8s, two 9s etc..)
- Banker pair which is the same as the previous one but for the banker this time.
